The Honour of the Knights

When starfighter pilot Simon Dodds is enrolled in a top secret military project, he and his wingmates begin to suspect that there is a lot more to the theft of a legendary battleship and an Imperial nation’s civil war than either the Confederation Stellar Navy or the government are willing to let on.

Within weeks of being reassigned to the Confederate border system of Temper, the five would begin to untangle a web of lies and a cover-up that seemed to span the length of the entire galaxy. And it would not be long before they themselves would come face to face with that which destroyed an empire: an unforgiving, unstoppable, and totally unrelenting foe.

There seemed to exist only one glimmer of hope of driving back the darkness: The ATAF Project – a secretly developed set of starfighters that may well just harbour some terrible secrets of their own.

I am here today with Stephen J. Sweeney, author of the Battle for the Solar System series. Hi Stephen. Tell us a little about yourself.

SS: My name is Stephen J Sweeney, and I’m a science fiction writer from England. I currently live in London and work as an IT contractor. I’ve been writing off and on all my life, but only recently decided to look into the commercial aspect of it. I’ve enjoyed the journey so far – there are certainly some interesting characters and people to be met, and the writing community is surprisingly warm and open.

JR: So far you have released two books in this series, The Honour of the Knights and The Third Side. What does the future look like for the series?

I am here today with Richard Herley, author of The Drowning, The Tide Mill, Refuge, The Penal Colony, and The Pagans trilogy. Hi Richard. Tell us a little about yourself.

RH: Hi, Jairus, and thank you very much for the invitation. I was born in 1950, in a market town about 20 miles north-west of central London, went to school locally and then on to Sussex University, where I studied biology. On the eve of my final exams I decided I didn’t want to be a scientist, but a professional writer. I worked a variety of jobs while trying to learn the craft, finishing a couple of execrable novels which are now hidden in my loft. In 1975 I had the idea of writing an historical thriller, set in Victorian times, but was intimidated by the research needed. So I kept going further and further back. Finally I reached the Stone Age. Since I knew a fair bit about the natural world, I was in business: The Stone Arrow was my first published novel.

The Penal Colony

The future.

The British government now runs island prison colonies to take dangerous offenders from its overcrowded mainland jails.

Among all these colonies, Sert, 25 miles off the north Cornish coast, has the worst reputation. There are no warders. Satellite technology is used to keep the convicts under watch. New arrivals are dumped by helicopter and must learn to survive as best they can. To Sert, one afternoon in July, is brought Anthony John Routledge, sentenced for a sex-murder he did not commit. Routledge knows he is here for ever. And he knows he must quickly forget the rules of civilized life. But not all the islanders are savages. Under the charismatic leadership of one man a community has evolved. A community with harsh and unyielding rules, peopled by resourceful men for whom the hopeless dream of escape may not be so hopeless after all …

The Endlands

Do you believe in a place outside human knowledge-a place where myth and legend collide-where the unthinkable is the mundane?

There is a thin veil between reality and make believe. When you take a moment, and push the veil aside, perhaps you will see this place, a place not of the imagination. Everything you see here is real.

Nothing is what it seems-noises are not what you think. Nothing is off limits-no place is safe.

You might find yourself lost in the past, or trapped in the future-amidst vampires and werewolves-or in a most peculiar lost and found department.

This is where unimaginable creatures roam wild-where humanity is absent, and dreams turn into nightmares. If you are looking for refuge, this is not the place to stop.

Welcome to the Endlands.

eBook of the day: The Other Room

eBook of the day: The Other Room

The Other Room

The Other Room is a collection of weird horror fiction, containing twelve stories of the uncanny and the surreal.

A naive student finds that his crumbling bedsit can be as haunted as any Gothic mansion.
A man stumbles across another world which is the mirror image of his own.
A young woman who everyone thinks is beautiful wonders why, given what she sees in the mirror each morning.

Influenced by writers such as Ramsey Campbell, Shirley Jackson, and Robert Aickman these tales, like all good horror stories, are as much about the psychology of the protagonist as the fate that awaits them.

The Other Room contains both new and previously published stories that will challenge your conceptions of horror and literary fiction.

Today I am here with James Everington, author of First Time BuyersFeed the EnemyThe Shelter and The Other Room. Welcome, James. Please tell us a little about yourself and your career.

JE: Well, I’m a writer from Nottingham in the UK. I mainly write short horror fiction – if you’ve read stories by Ramsey Campbell or Thomas Ligotti you’ll know what I’m aiming for, although whether I’ve hit the mark is another question.

I’ve had a number of stories published in small-press magazines, but the main place you can find my work is the self-published collection The Other Room.

JR: What attracted you to the horror genre?

JE: It’s my dad’s fault probably. Certainly it was him who handed me a copy of Salem’s Lot at an impressionable age. My dad’s bookshelves were always sagging under the weight of books (still are, actually) so I was always pestering him for something to read as a kid.

JR: I recently read your short story First Time Buyers. I must say it had some creepy imagery. What inspired you to write this short?

I am here today with Monica S. Kuebler, managing editor of Rue Morgue Magazine and owner of Burning Effigy Press. Tell us a little about yourself and your company.

MK: I’m a writer, editor, photographer, performer and publisher, and Burning Effigy is my micro-press. Between 1999 and 2006, we published primarily poetry and spoken word. In 2007, we kicked up a horror line, featuring novella-length tales from some the most interesting and groundbreaking authors working in the genre today.

JR: I’m curious, how did you come up with the name of your press?

MK: It was the result of an inside joke from back when I was in high school. It’s definitely one of those you-had-to-be-there type things. The name is 100% cooler than the story behind it.

I’m here today with Kevis Hendrickson, the first author to appear twice in Author Outtakes! Kevis, the reason I wanted to do another interview with you is because I am very impressed with your new work. Describe your progression as an author over the past year.

KH: My journey as a writer has been quite interesting. One of the biggest changes in my approach to my career is a renewed focus on the craft of writing. I’m spending much more time studying and reading than I have in years. I’ve made it a point to raise my game and strengthen the weaker areas of my writing.

Part of this process involved finding a new editor who has the chops to take my writing to the next level. In the past, I made the mistake of ignoring my editors to my own detriment. But my new editor is putting me through my paces. I’ve been forced to eat a bit of humble pie under her tutelage, and have gained an appreciation of just how far I have to go to become an elite writer.

Over the course of a couple of days, all the liquid is lost from the body, leaving in its wake a dried shell.

Just a slight vibration is enough for the corpse to detonate, sending millions of dust spores into the air.

Everyone over the age of 40 has been wiped out by an unidentified fungal plague. Only the young remain. The survivors leave their shelters and emerge into a world blanketed with clouds of drifting spores.

They believe that the worst is over, now is the time to start re-building. They have yet to encounter the abominations, altered by the spores. They thought the plague was the end.

Book Review: Dune

Book Review: Dune

Dune

I wouldn’t call myself the biggest book critic out there, as I am typically a little generous with ranking books on places like Amazon and Goodreads. Usually when I write a review, I love the story and want everyone to know it. I won’t review books I don’t like because I think it’s ridiculous to rip apart an author without offering anything constructive. That being said, I was going through some of my reviews and found one little paragraph about a novel I read a few years back. I was disturbed because it was one of my favorite books ever, but I never reviewed the book. So here is my review of Dune.

There is one word to describe my feelings about Dune: Epic. It is the Epic of epics. I was forced to read this by one of my authors, as he was disgusted that I had never read the story. I am not going to lie. I am not a huge fan of science fiction, and was a little doubtful that I would enjoy the read.

Today I am here with Ed Wilson, Editor in Chief of Citizen Literature. Ed, tell us a little about yourself and Citizen Literature.

EW: How much time do we have here exactly?

No, I’m kidding. Citizen Literature was a longtime vision I’d toyed with for the last two years. In short, it’s a book review site solely for self-published or independently published books and novels. In the long-term, I’d like for it to be an open community devoted to the misfits of the publishing industry. As for me, I’m just a reader and writer like any other. I love to read, and I already owned a stack of offbeat books anyhow. The kind of novels you’d find at a used bookstore like A Serious Night of Drinking by Rene Daumal or the Voyage to Arcturus by David Lindsay. I’m nuts for Sci-fi and animation. Definitely would like more submissions of that sort. *hint* *hint*
