I have noticed a trend lately on social media sites, where authors and other professionals are posting their opinions on politics, religion and other delicate subjects. THIS IS DANGEROUS. I understand we live in a country where we have the right to free speech, but isolating a demographic based on your personal opinions is not only unprofessional, but it WILL affect your book sales. And not in a positive way.

Think about it. Do you see Coca-Cola running a commercial that isn’t directed at everyone watching a commercial or reading a print ad? Do you see them posting which presidential candidate they would support, or bashing the opposition? Do you see any advertisement that selects a specific religion to target, while excluding others? NO. Why you ask? Why would anyone spend money and time purposely excluding demographics based on a company’s opinion? They would not only immediately lose sales to potential customers, but they could be seen as offensive to an entire group of people who no longer would consider purchasing their products. That is not smart advertising, in fact, it is committing advertising suicide.

I understand we are entitled to our own opinions, but be careful when you mix social media with personal beliefs. Think about it for a second. America is about 45% “liberal”, 45% “conservative” and 10% somewhere in the middle. If you go on Facebook and criticize Republicans or Democrats, you are immediately excluding 45% of the population from purchasing your product. Most of us don’t have Stephen King sales and few of us can afford excluding any potential sale. And why would you? Isn’t the point of writing to get EVERYONE to read your book? Hell, a book is one of the best mediums to portray your personal opinions. Don’t exclude an audience automatically because your opinion differs from others. You are just causing self-inflicted pain. 

Many times throughout the week I want to post my opinions, or argue with someone else online, but I own a company. I want everyone to enjoy my products, not just people with beliefs similar to my own. And a word of warning: this is the age of the internet. Once something is posted, it can always be found. It has personally affected me. Due to some of the publisher rants I have posted in the past, I have had some people refuse interviews due to a conflict of interest. It will bite you at some point. 

My advice is this: Use your books as a medium to express your opinions. Don’t mix social media with your personal opinions because it will affect your sales. Social media sites are free advertising, and you don’t want to exclude any person or group from purchasing your product.
