Very nice interview. He seems like a dencet guy, but at the same time he seems like nothing more then a successful marketer (no offense to him is intended at all). I don't think his tips are any more or less useful then any other internet marketing professional and the idea of giving away free ebooks is become very increasingly popular as a marketing method. I commend him on a job well done, but as with any marketing business what works for one person, generally doesn't stay working long enough for it to work for a mass number. Just my thoughts again no insult is intended

I tend to agree for the most part. I'm a major cinephile, but when a movie is based on a book I love, I almost always tend to prefer the book. It's not that the movie is bad, but it's very hard to adapt a very good book to the big screen.

And making Arwen a bigger part of the LOTR films was really just away to attract a female audience. Totally calculated, really. I'm totally with you on the Cleansing of the Shire omission. I also didn't much care for the way Frodo was made into a doe-eyed emo boy. Tolkien's version of him was much tougher. He did a credit to his Hobbit race by showing how valiant they were despite their size.

There are only a few instances where I thought a movie trumped a book. The Shawshank Redemption was, to me, a better movie. Maybe it was because of the actors, though. They really brought something special to the screen.

For those of you writers who are new to e-publishing, you should know that Mark Coker is a decent, honest, and thoughtful person. Money doesn't seem to be his main currency. I think he nailed it best when he was talking about DRM (copy protection)and said "obscurity, not piracy, is an author's main enemy".

If you're a hugely successful author, you're not going to need Smashwords. If you're the other 99.99%, give it a try.

I just want to say how much I appreciate what you've done. I had always written non-fiction for newspapers and magazines until recently when I began writing novels. What publishers mostly told me was that my writing didn't fit into any genre. I had not considered e-publishing because I didn't think I was tech-literate enough to handle the mechanics of it. But...your guide made it so easy that my first novel has now been published through Smashwords. Thank you so much for giving writers hope and autonomy.
