Industry Interview: Smashwords Founder Mark Coker

Today I am here with Mark Coker, founder of Smashwords, a distributor of e-books. Tell us a little about yourself and Smashwords.

MC: Smashwords is the world’s largest distributor of indie ebooks.  We distribute over 90,000 ebooks from over 33,000 indie authors and small publishers.  My background is in technology marketing here in Silicon Valley going back 20 years.  I’m also an angel investor in over a dozen technology startups, and have founded a couple myself.

JR: How did the idea of Smashwords come about?

SP: We are an independent publisher of survival horror based in Melbourne Australia, founded in 2008

JR: What inspired you to publish primarily horror novels? Why not publish other genres of fiction?

Burning Effigy Press

I am here today with Monica S. Kuebler, managing editor of Rue Morgue Magazine and owner of Burning Effigy Press. Tell us a little about yourself and your company.

MK: I’m a writer, editor, photographer, performer and publisher, and Burning Effigy is my micro-press. Between 1999 and 2006, we published primarily poetry and spoken word. In 2007, we kicked up a horror line, featuring novella-length tales from some the most interesting and groundbreaking authors working in the genre today.

JR: I’m curious, how did you come up with the name of your press?

MK: It was the result of an inside joke from back when I was in high school. It’s definitely one of those you-had-to-be-there type things. The name is 100% cooler than the story behind it.

Industry Interviews: Dellani Oakes

I am here today with Dellani Oakes, host of Red River radio, a fellow blogger, and an author. Hello, Dellani, tell us a little about your work and your radio show.

DO: I’ve been writing since I could put pen to paper—actually, I think I originally wrote in crayon…. I started with poems for Grandma & progressed to song parodies, short stories and plays. After having children, I set writing aside, but started up again once my youngest started school.

Industry Interviews: Citizen Literature

Today I am here with Ed Wilson, Editor in Chief of Citizen Literature. Ed, tell us a little about yourself and Citizen Literature.

EW: How much time do we have here exactly?

No, I’m kidding. Citizen Literature was a longtime vision I’d toyed with for the last two years. In short, it’s a book review site solely for self-published or independently published books and novels. In the long-term, I’d like for it to be an open community devoted to the misfits of the publishing industry. As for me, I’m just a reader and writer like any other. I love to read, and I already owned a stack of offbeat books anyhow. The kind of novels you’d find at a used bookstore like A Serious Night of Drinking by Rene Daumal or the Voyage to Arcturus by David Lindsay. I’m nuts for Sci-fi and animation. Definitely would like more submissions of that sort. *hint* *hint*

Industry Interviews: Clover Entertainment, Inc.

Today I am here with Stephanie A. Johnson, owner of Clover Entertainment, Inc. She is a literary manager and producer, working to get books made into movies and television shows.

JR: Hey Stephanie, tell us a little about yourself and Clover Entertainment.

SJ:  Well, that’s a bit of a long story.  I was a Talent agent for many years.  I’ve worked with such talent as Johnny Depp, Julia Roberts and many others.  I formed Clover Entertainment a few years ago when I decided I wanted to marry the two things I loved the most, books with film and television.

Industry Interviews: Twit Publishing

Here today with me is Craig Gabrysch, owner of Twit Publishing.

JR: Tell everyone a little about yourself and Twit Publishing.

CG: Well, first off, I’m actually co-owner with my brother, Chris Gabrysch. And, according to the paperwork, neither  of us actually own it. We’re “managing members.”

I write a little fiction for Twit’s anthologies, and serve as a sort of junior editor (meaning I help proof the books).

Other than that, I do all the layout for the print books and eBook conversions, manage the website, etc. Ideally, I’d be the one writing the blogs and do Twitter stuff too, but those are on the back burner at the moment.
